Beside the Brave
Styling & Session Preparation Guide
The Beside the Brave portrait series is created with intention, simplicity, and respect. This guide is designed to help you prepare for your session so the focus remains where it belongs — on the bond you share with your dog.
Nothing in this guide is meant to be rigid. Your comfort and your dog’s well-being always come first.
What to Wear (Veterans)
The goal is timeless, understated, and comfortable.
Recommended:
Neutral or muted tones (black, charcoal, navy, olive, tan)
Simple layers (jackets, sweaters, button-downs)
Well-fitted, comfortable clothing you can move in
Closed-toe shoes or boots
Best to Avoid:
Bright colors or large logos
Busy patterns or graphics
Clothing with visible text
Matching outfits (subtle coordination is better)
Military apparel is welcome if it feels meaningful to you, but it is never required.
Your Dog’s Look
For visual consistency and a gallery-style aesthetic, portraits are typically created with minimal gear.
Recommended:
A simple collar (leather or fabric)
Neutral tones if possible
No dangling tags (these can be removed temporarily)
Please Avoid When Possible:
Head halters or muzzle-style equipment
Bright harnesses or vests
Retractable leashes
If your dog requires specific equipment for comfort, safety, or training, that is absolutely okay — please let me know ahead of time so we can plan thoughtfully.
Your dog’s well-being always comes first.
Grooming & Preparation
You don’t need to overdo it.
For you:
Natural grooming is perfect
Clean hands (they will likely be visible in portraits)
Dress comfortably — stiffness shows on camera
For your dog:
A good brush before the session
Wipe eyes and muzzle if needed
Trim nails if possible (not required)
What to Bring
A leash (even if it won’t be visible)
A few small treats (nothing crumbly or messy)
Water for your dog
Any mobility or comfort items your dog may need
During the Session
Sessions are relaxed and guided, lasting approximately 60–90 minutes.
There is no pressure to “perform” or share anything you’re not comfortable with. We’ll spend time talking, observing, and allowing moments to unfold naturally.
Nothing is forced. Nothing is rushed.
Final Thoughts
Beside the Brave is not about perfection. It’s about presence, loyalty, and shared strength. Come as you are. Bring the dog who stands beside you. Everything else will fall into place.
